It will think the code isn't portable and choke on it.

Presumably, I'd code a C version and then I'd code a processor
dependent assembly/inline version for each processor architecture
(this is one area where much of the FreeBSD assembly code sucks
out: no up-to-date C versions).

If I were a weenie, I'd put them all in the same file and #ifdef them.
