It also used to work on my home box without this option before last upgrade. 
I don't remember exactly, but it's likely that my mozilla ang galeon were 
upgraded together with xorg. Still I don't know how that option get into my 
config at work, but that doesn't matter I think.

Indeed, there is a bugzilla entry (which is more than a year old)

And it was closed on 2004-12-31, but only for mozilla >= 1.8a5 (as far as I 
can understand). It's a pity I've found it only after my problem was solved. 
It could save me some time.

Now I have an understanding of what has happened: In mozilla file: URL's are 
disabled in non-local pages for security reasons. I suppose, mozilla < 1.7.5 
do not apply such a restriction for image sources and that's why myportal: 
works with older mozilla. In CVS they apply a different security policy to 
myportal: page and that policy allows file: URLs.
