OK, I was looking at the -CURRENT version:

$Id: adduser.perl,v 1.37 1997/09/20 19:59:54 wosch Exp $

That has several mentions of class in it.  Perhaps we need to bug wosch
into MFC'ing the login class stuff.  But it has some corrent-isms like
allowing long filenames and not worrying about /etc/group file length.

Looking at a diff of 1.37 vs. 1.19.2.7 is very educational :)
