Here my status: - Booting the image from USB in UEFI mode worked. - Booting the image from USB in Legacy Only didn't work. Installing zfs without encryption just with default values didn't lead to a booting sytem after reboot. As far as I understood the UEFI/Bios bug reports in that specific version of Thinkpads not only checks the partition active status. It looks like the type of the first partition is part of the problem, too. I stumbled over this manual fix but had no time to try it.
