I'm sending this message as a future reference for other people
who might have the same problem.

Despite what the od(4) man page says, working with 2048-byte sector
MO cartridges is not possible under FreeBSD 2.2.x. I have just switched
to FreeBSD 3.0, and now I can use these cartridges without any
problem, thanks to the CAM drivers.
