Hmm, shouldn't it be possible to probe the RAID controller using some
code from MegaMonitor or some other module. One just need to get some
information during runtime.

Per,

This MegaRAID controllers have an audible alarm, which I have turned on
on each system we have. Since I have to visit the lab once a day to
rotate tapes I will hopefully know if one of the controllers is
reporting a failed drive.

Additionally FreeBSD will report the array as "degraded" in syslog, but
I suspect only if you make FreeBSD probe the RAID controller (i.e.
reboot). Please correct me if I am wrong.

All round, not a good solution, so I'm moving to Adaptec 2200S
controllers which, as Scott says, are well supported under FreeBSD.
