Kevin,

It's not really a devil; a daemon is entirely different. The
Shorter Oxford English Dictionary contains:

Demon Also dæmon. ME [In form, and in sense I, a. L. dæmon
(med. L. demon)...] 1. Gr. Myth. A being of a nature intermediate
between that of gods and men; an inferior divinity, spirit
(including the souls of deceased persons). Often written dæmon
for distinction. 1569.

Take a look at <http://www.daemonnews.org/199810/daemon.html>; for
the whole story, courtesy of Greg Lehey.
