Funny that ye missed to mention the most obvious of all answers Bill ;)

YYYY/MM/DD (/serial number) is the way that's the best for source control
and logging, because of the speed in which the numerics increase and change
the number(s) before it... But then again, I don't think I really have to
explain that to ye =)
