this is an exerpt of the boot console
----------------------------------------------------
ppc0: FIFO with 16/16/1 bytes threshold
ppi0: <Parallel I/O> on ppbus0
lpt0: <Printer> on ppbus0
lpt0: Interrupt-driven port
sbc0: <Creative ViBRA16C> at port 0x220-0x22f, 0x330-0x331 ........
sbc0: setting card to irq 5, drq 1, 5
pcm0: <SB DSP 4.13> on sbc0
unknown0: <Game> at port 0x200-0x207 on isa0
no devsw (majdev=3D0 bootdev=3D0xa200000)
Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad1s1a
no such device 'ad'
setrootbyname failed
ffs_mountroot: can't find rootvp
Root mount failed: 6

Manual root filesystem specification:
  <fstype>:<device> Mount <device> using filesystem <fstype>
			eg. ufs:/dev/da0s1a
? List valid disk boot devices
<empty line> Abort manual input

mountroot> =20

Now if I type ? at the mountroot>
I get this

Possibly valid devices for 'ufs' root:
"console" "ctty" "mem" "pts" "ptc" "log" "fd" "sc" "lpt" "psm" "FD" =
"bpf" "sio"
"snd" "tun" "pci" "ppi" "md" "MFS"

The kernel is 4.0-STABLE
any ideas as to why this is happening?
It is my third attempt at compiling this kernel.
here is the uname -a output
