AFAIR the Alpha will behave like that if the top cover is not attached. 
There is a little switch you should hold,
when switching on the server with no top cover. A similar thing will 
happen if one of the fans are defective.

Except from that I have an Alpha 1000 and a DS20 if that can do you any 
help.
