The setting are pretty similar to what I use, but I have a few more
daemons started for Gnome.

Me too.  You would think that being able to set the paper size would be
easy to do from Gnome, but no...

I sometimes have the reverse problem: the ppd assumes A4, and I have
letter only. That freezes the printer.
