System: FreeBSD duncan.reilly.home 7.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE #36: Sat Nov 15 09:26:38 EST 2008 root@duncan.reilly.home:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/DUNCAN amd64

This machine is an Athlon64-X2 with (according to
dmesg.boot) pcm0 on an nVidia nForce4 Avance Logic
	ALC850 AC97 Codec (which seem{s,ed} to work OK: don't
	use it much).
>Description:
Logging in to Gnome after a reboot results in the splash
screen hanging around with the start-pulseaudio-x11
indication at the bottom. This (the splash screen)
eventually goes away, but it seems that the pulseaudio
thing doesn't. When I log out, and attempt to log back
in, some of my gnome start processes (eg claws-mail)
start, but some don't. Importantly, the panel and the
nautilus desktop do not start properly, so I can't do
anything else at that point. I use ctl-alt-F1 to switch
to a console and kill GNOME with /usr/local/etc/rc.d/gdm
stop. A subsequent ps x shows that a bunch of gnome
daemons are still running, including two copies of
start-pulseaudio-x11. All of these daemons go away with
a kill -TERM, except for one of the start-pulseaudio-x11
daemons, which requires a kill -KILL to shift.

>How-To-Repeat:
Log in to GNOME for the second time since reboot.
>Fix:

No fix, but the work-around seems to be to manually kill
	start-pulseaudio-x11, as described above.
