Don't "fix" it in the port -- that's the wrong place to do it. Fix it in the libtool distribution. Also make sure that if you really want to get rid of the .la files, ensure that third party apps don't install them in the first place *without* hacking them. I.e. no port patches or anything should be required. Then all we would have to do is upgrade libtool and bam, the .la files are gone and the ports tree is better and cleaner for it.
