	With the help of a friend, this has been solved.  I just wanted to
get the solution into the mailing list archives in case anyone else ever
did what I did.  When I updated the BIOS fash memory, it reset a lot of
things.  One of them was the UART 1 settings, which apparently effect the
COM1 port quite a bit.  :)
