I think the case with CF is the same with USB memory sticks. The kernel
reports the "geometry" when it's plugged in. Check dmesg for anything
interesting.

There is a mailing list for "Dedicated and Embedded Systems based upon 
FreeBSD", Maybe you should ask there.
