FWIW, acroread 9.4.1 has the same problem - it crashes as my normal
user, but works if started from root:
root@kg-v2# portversion -v | grep acroread
acroread9-9.4.1             =3D  up-to-date with port
acroreadwrapper-0.0.20100806  =3D  up-to-date with port
