Can second the 3Ware cards, but only have had a few days to play with 
them.  Not sure exactly when install support came in, but with RC1 has it 
(this after I did it the hard way).

The 2 port 6200 runs around $130, 4 port 6400 about $230, and 8 port 6800 
around $400.

One thing overlooked was a comment line in MAKEDEV:
