Hm - I've been using a kernel without INET6 turned on since I don't need
any IP6 stuff here.  ping6 simply returns this:

    $ ping6 localhost
    ping6: Non-recoverable failure in name resolution
    $

I'll build a new kernel with INET6 turned back on and see if that makes
a difference.

In the meantime, I've appended "truss telnet localhost" output below.
