Thanks, Alexander. Roman Bogdanov sent me the solution by e-mail: set 
hint.pcm.0.buffersize="16384" in /boot/device.hints. I get the feeling I 
should be receiving a good "RTFM" for this question due to the simplicity of 
the solution.
