Expert assistance for building and installing over two thousand
third-party packages may be found encapsulated within the FreeBSD
ports collection.  It's truly a marvelous resource!  :-)

See http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/ports.html for the lowdown.

For your specific case of the gimp simply:
   cd /usr/ports/graphics/gimp1 && make install clean

If you somehow manage to find something worthwhile that's not in
the ports collection, you can become a contributor to the FreeBSD
project by following these instructions:
   http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/porting.html
