But, when I transferred a FS from one disk to another to give it more space, it went from <1 to 5% fragmentation - AFAIK the FS is optimised to stay defragmented in normal use - which doesn't include copying the whole thing. This may depend on how you copy the FS across - I think I used cpio but I'm not sure... (although I've not used it, I would expect dump to leave everything unchanged.)
