I know that's not it: I'm not THAT newbie   :P
I know I got it to work before; just can't see why I'm having so much
trouble this time.  I know the devices are all there, because
A) I can mount filesystems on CD's just fine, and
B) I did an ll /dev | grep cd to see what other devices I could try
It's kinda annoying that I have more trouble with xcdplayer than I do with
a make release...
