Have you checked the volumes set in kmix -> Input ?

When I first tried skype I found that in my instalation they were set to zero by default.  You can then 
register echo123 as a skype user and call them, listen to their message then record a message in your voice(10 
seconds).  They will then play it back so you can use it as a reference for troubleshooting.
