There are a number of alternatives, each with its own particular advantages
and disadvantages.  Among the most popular are smail, qmail, exim, zmailer,
and the new vmailer.

I suggest you look through the FreeBSD ports under category "Mail", or
investigate these sites:

http://www.exim.org/
http://www.qmail.org/
http://www.vmailer.org/
