As I recall (I've not used it for awhile), the pkg_version man page
*and* the script that you can generate both state flatly that it's a
bad idea to just try to blindly run the script.
My recommendation to you, if you really want to do this (and I still
don't think it's the best idea in the world), is the following
sequence:
install portupgrade
configure pkgtools.conf to put your INDEX someplace
where cvsup won't overwrite it.
portsdb -uU
pkgdb -uF
portupgrade -aF
in that order.
