    Tweak your modelines so that the horiz. sync width is less than 256?  
IIt's just a wild thought.  :-)

    xvidtune could be of considerable help to you, as could chapter 10 
("XFree86 Configuration in Depth") of Greg Lehey's book, _The Complete 
FreeBSD_.  This chapter has a discussion of how to compute modelines 
yourself from first principles.
