use the parrallel port its faster
add this to your /etc/rc.conf on one machine
and the same thing on the other except in reverse order.

make sure you use a bidirectional cable, i made that mistake
before!

also edit /etc/rc.conf to say gateway="YES" on the 586 machine.

thats it i believe.

add this to rc.conf

ifconfig_lp0="inet 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0"
