I distinctly remember adding it to the manpage.  This was a nice idea
before portupgrade came along, but too many people managed to shoot
themselves in the foot with it.  I guess people are still doing it.  :-(

Thanks to Jeremy Lea, who had the wisdom to leave this feature *out*
when he reimplemented pkg_version for -CURRENT.

I am concerned that the original poster might have his ports setup so
confused now that it might be better just to wipe everything out and
start over.

(If it means anything, I think that knu has done a fantastic job with 
portupgrade, and it's what I use regularly.)
