oh, yes, of course, only a few centimeters on my worldmap ;-)

i think its cold there, even in summer. several years ago i was in
scotland for vacation.
we (my wife and me) are wearing all day pullovers and rainsuits and at
home they are
dieing in the heat! so i decided never to go again to the north, even in
summer.

you're right, there's more software availaible for linux, but does all

work together? bsd is a rock stable system, it's fast (ok, not the fs

because it's working in sync) and you can put a HUGE load on it. do you

povray? it's a freeware raytracer, a real system hog. two weeks ago i've

started 42 processes of it under x and fvwm. when it was running i was

able to switch screens, use my shell (to play nethack :-)) without any

waiting for the system. in another case i used it for a unix-course (i'm
a teacher after daywork) and put 20 users on one P166 with 64megs ram.
needless to say that nobody noticed some delay. do this with linux and
you will see....

go to /pub/freebsd/2.2.5-release and grab all excluding commerce, des
and xperimnt. commerce are some commercial demos, des isn't permitted to
use outside of the us and xperimnt is some experimental stuff (which i
never installed!). the biggest piece to download are the packages,
exclude them for the first time (your father won't panic at the phone
bill!) but load them down over the next time. they'll be worth it. be
sure to download the handbook and print it out!!! there is much useful
stuff inside! when you are more familiar with the system you can build
your own customized kernel and install all of the packages you like.

yes, you execute binaries for sco-unix and some other ixes i don't know
at this moment. for special graphic cards you are restricted to the
X386-distribution in the file-tree i mentioned above. is this for you a
crucial? i think not, imho the primary use of unix is to develop
software and do your work with minimal effort.

hope to helped you
