The NI5210 is pretty slow. I saw a similar effect when I used a 
NI5210/FreeBSD system to talk to a Digital Alpha Unix box.

Adding a 2nd 8kbyte SRAM chip to the NI5210 helped to get NFS working
between the 2 systems.

Bottom line: get something better than the 5210
