IIRC FreeBSD 4-STABLE has fixes incorporated to correct a 
problem playing DVD's that run over 2+ hours, problem 
handeling DVD disks over a certain size. The problem would 
panic your machine.

That may be of assistance in getting your system updated to 
4-STABLE.
