No. The correct answer is to fix your xterm to identify itself as xterm-color, and then when you are forced to use a broken system use whatever mechanism is most appropriate to select an alternative terminal type (.ssh/environment would be useful here, for example). -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also.
