Ugh.  Not again.

Historically, it's because you need sized types for 8, 16, 32, and 64
to acess hardware registers on 64 bit machines, and char, short, and long
weren't enough to express this, and int can't be bigger than long and
it's stupid for int to be 32 if a 64 bit transfer takes a single bus cycle.
