I've booted FreeBSD off a BIOS-level floppy emulation implemented with 
FLASH memory.

What would be much sexier would be XIP out of flash, but that involves 
some slightly funky hardware and/or magic to make the kernel handle 
different load addresses.  There are quite a few nasty assumptions that 
would break.
