In case anybody is wondering, this wasn't as bad as I feared. I was
trying to fix up some wreckage from the cvs 'clear default branch' bug
when cvsupd started aborting with fatal errors. I thought I'd done
something really bad for a while, but it turns out that freefall was
corrupting the rcs files in strange ways (short chunks of binary garbage
etc) near where I was editing.

However, the cvs problems had snowballed while they had not been fixed for
a while so I decided to take the opportunity to fix that and some other
problems. Expect some strange things in your cvsup logs and commit
messages.
