I'm not sure I've seen all replies, but I think I haven't seen a mention
of the malloc flags so far.

If you haven't changed the default malloc flags please do so and try
again:

 % ll /etc/malloc.conf
lrwx------  1 root  wheel     2B 18 Aug  2001 /etc/malloc.conf@ -> aj

The 'a' isn't important here, but the 'j' affects the performance.
