sendmail *really* likes to use DNS for name resolution.  Sounds like
you are using /etc/hosts instead of named.

There is a way to get sendmail to use /etc/hosts (check www.sendmail.org)
but I'd suggest either

a) running named
b) setting /etc/resolv.conf to point at functional name servers that
know about your machine.
