I've heard of someone who has disabled the directory updating of last
accessed time for files. They found a significant improvement in their
news server performance. For a news server, storing last accessed time is
not particularly important.

I've glanced through the code, but I am unsure where to disable the
writing of last access time in directory.

Has anyone ever done this with FreeBSD?
