been getting an occasional error message on my root console that I've
never seen before.  It looks to me like a problem in the network
somewhere (which is beyond my control) but I was hoping you might be
able to help me to identify it.

Here's the error as it was reported in the kernel log that gets mailed
daily to root:

arp: unknown hardware address format (0000)
