I am wondering if installing from a CD in/on a different machine than what you are installing on will be better... so you have the CD in another machine the is avaliable through ftp/nfs and the installing machine brings it off over the net... basicly I think the problem stemmed from having the floppies in the parent of the distributions instead of the distributions... so it wouldn't be able to find the root file system...
