I don't know why you think that.  I sent a week in Germany with ATI's
FireGL Linux driver team.

http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html certainly lists "Linux/XFree86"
as an OS choice and the various "FireGL" products.  I bet one of these
drivers would work with newer Radeon cards.
