I'm looking in to the gnomelibs source right now.. please bear with me
for a few days, since RealJob[tm] is pretty hectic right now.

In the meantime, the "fix" is to add the following to your shell
startup files, season to taste for locale and shell:

setenv	LC_ALL en_US.ISO_8859-1
setenv	LC_CTYPE	en_US.ISO_8859-1
setenv	LANG en_US.ISO_8859-1
