Well this explains another user's problem as well.  You _must_ use
pkgconfig-0.12.0 to build GNOME 2 components.  I fixed a bug in that
version only that affects building on 4.x platforms.  However, we do not
support any GNOME components on FreeBSD 4.0.  You must be running at
least FreeBSD 4.1.
