Red Hat simply values short term gain to such an extent that it ignores the negative long term consequences of the GPL. (To put it succinctly: Never assume malice when ignorance will do. It's the GPL that was motivated by malice, not Red Hat.) Right now, Red Hat's success is fueled largely by Linux fanaticism.
