Where it connects is important.

If the internal cable goes from the controller past the internal devices
and the end of it is extented through the case to the external cable,
that is OK.

However, I think that you have a "three legged star".

The controller sits at the center and the cables extend out in three
directions.

The key is how many ENDS of cables are there.

The external cable will clearly be one.
The 16 bit cable is another.
And the internal 8bit is a third.

The only LEGAL configuration is to leave at least one of them unused.
