Hi, I suspect the problem does not lie in FreeBSD, but elsewhere. Have you tried using different floppy discs? Specially another brand? Maybe the cable connecting your floppy drive is playing on you or even the drive itself is faulty. I just tried the following on a fresh 5.5-RELEASE install without any problems: # mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt [...] # fdformat /dev/fd0 # newfs -L FreeBSD /dev/fd0 # newfs_msdos -f 1440 -L MSDOS /dev/fd0 I hope this helps.
