If you get that far, X is running.  Those error messages are there for
a purpose.  Read them.

So you're saying that root can't start X?  That's probably a good
idea.  You shouldn't be running as root.

Start by describing how far you get.  Also take a look at
/var/log/XFree86.0.log.
