And instantly invalidate the viability of commercial software vendors
4.3-RELEASE versions of code running on systems tracking -stable to
keep up with serious bug fixes.

It's a double edge sword, this change should either go in now, or
right before 4.4 goes to BETA.  Any other time is going to have
disruptive effects...

The only real time that breaking binary capatibilty in the -stable
tree makes since is right _BEFORE_ release, not right after!
