If there's a FAQ maintainer for this, the faq entry should look like

USR/3COM: The Courier line of modems was their flagship, and they never
made a Courier winmodem, so all Couriers are fully compatible with
FreeBSD. The sportster line had a couple of winmodem models, so caution
is advised. The quickest way to tell if a sportster is compatible (the
only non-compatible sportsters are the winmodems) are the two generalized
winmodem winnowing rules: external modems are never winmodems, and modems
that have jumpers for determining the ttyS (COM) port, IRQ, and I/O port
can not be winmodems.
