yes, I've included "device atapicam' in my kernel config file.

# grep atapi /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/LILO
device          atapicd         # ATAPI CDROM drives
device          atapifd         # ATAPI floppy drives
device          atapist         # ATAPI tape drives
device          atapicam        # emulate ATAPI devices as SCSI ditto via
CAM
